Spring is around the corner, yet here in the North East we still have snow on the ground. The heat is still cranking and the air is dry. Often this dry air can lead to crack skin at knuckles and dry patches known as asteatotic eczema.  Science is not sure what causes eczema and these dry patches and there is no specific cure for eczema.

Most worrisome is how to cleanse skin when it is so dry and itchy. This is the number one question that we are asked at our farmers market booths and our answer takes a bit of explanation.

The problem with liquid cleansers is the need for preservatives and the use of chemicals to make the product lather, remain stable, prohibit mold growth and increase shelf life.  Many of these ingredients can be an irritant, dry out skin and trigger complexion problems.

Let's take a look at the ingredients in an over the counter body wash for sensitive skin.

The amount of concerning ingredients used in any one product surely is not enough to spur a major health concern-though it could dry out or trigger a skin issue. However, these type of ingredients are used in many products from hair care, makeup to household cleaners. Could these ingredients build up and layer in our systems? It seems logical that they could.

Are paraben and phthalates free formulas better?

What are Parabens? Parabens are compounds used in skin care and food to as a preservative.  Any product with significant water content will need a preservative. Some Preservatives are better than others, for instance in our skin care products with water we use natural preservatives along with Leucidal® Liquid one of the few preservatives allowed by wholefoods.

What are Phthalates?  Phthalates are used in products from toys to cosmetics, and "fix' fragrance or make it stable. Since fragrance ingredient is not required, any product that is scented with synthetics instead of essential oils could contain phthalates.  This compound is thought to interrupt normal human hormones affecting reproduction, birth defects, and male testosterone levels.

Even soaps that look "naked" are not always chemical free. Soaps bases that are made to be melted and poured often contain synthetic chemicals, colors, and fragrances not only making the soap quickly disintegrate in the shower but mitigate the positives of using a bar soap.

These ingredients are found in a very "earth friendly' established brand:

Potassium thiocyanate A potassium salt, that is used by the pharmaceutical industry or chemotherapeutic drugs, antibiotics and thyroid medications. The chemical industry uses it to produce photographs and textiles and to manufacture herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides.

POTASSIUM IODIDE A2 on the skin deep scale found to have persistent or bioaccumulative and moderate to high toxicity concern in humans.

Our cold processed soap is concentrated oils, butter, and herbs absent of water.  Self-preserving and truly natural these bar cleanse, condition and moisturize sensitive skin helping.

Our cold processed soap is concentrated oils, butter, and herbs absent of water.  Self-preserving and truly natural these bar cleanse, condition and moisturize all skin types, including sensitive skin.

But isn't cold processed soap made with toxic lye?  Soap is made from by a chemical reaction between lye and oil.

When both chemicals meet they are transformed. Oil is no longer oil, it is now soap. Lye is no longer lye,  it is soap.

None of the compounds of lye remains in the soap once it has been properly cured. So, while soap is made with lye, the end product does not contain it.  Years ago it was more of a guessing game and soap could be lye heavy. Today, soap making calculators, scales, and processing methods ensure lye is properly matched with oils and transformed into soap.

In addition, our salty soap has a high content of Cape Cod sea salts. These sea salts not only increase the health benefits of the soap but the lather. Our natural soap bars lather to a rich creamy foam, without chemicals and even in hard water. For skin suffering from eczema, we recommend our holistically formulated, works bar. The skin loving oils, and potent minerals and herbs work to restore skins natural ph, cleanse without drying, locks in moisture and keep skin healthy.
